The best free romantic AI, judged on what $0 actually buys
Nineteen companions advertise a free tier. We spent every one of them to the wall and logged the exact message where the paywall appeared — this page is that log, ranked.

02The detail
A free tier is a number, not a checkbox
Everyone offers a free plan. Almost nobody tells you it ends four messages in, right when the conversation gets interesting.
Ranking the best free romantic AI means measuring depth, not counting the word free on a pricing page. So we did the boring thing: one account per candidate, no payment method attached, and a counter running until something locked. Nineteen tiers, nineteen numbers. The spread was absurd — the shallowest cut us off after six replies, the winner ran a full evening and then some.
Two failure patterns eat most of the field. The first is the emotional cliff: the plan is generous until a conversation turns intimate, then the tone shifts into an upsell mid-sentence. The second is quieter and worse — a free tier that works fine but resets her memory every session, so you are technically chatting for nothing and starting from zero every night.
Our winner does neither. It hands you the full roster, real memory and unlimited browsing before asking for anything, and when the paywall does arrive it is a labelled door with a price on it. That is the whole argument of this page: judge a free tier by where it stops, and check that it tells you before it does.
What works well
- Winner ran 40+ messages in one evening with no card and no cap warning
- Memory persists on the free tier — she still knows you tomorrow
- Whole roster browsable before signup, not a three-character teaser
- Paywall arrives labelled, with the monthly price shown before you click
- No trial countdown, so nothing charges you for forgetting to cancel
Worth knowing first
- Voice replies and the deeper scene settings stay on the paid tier
- Image generation is metered even on the best free plan we found
- Peak-hour replies run a shade slower for free accounts than paid ones
- Every companion is fictional software, not a person
- Adults only — the age gate loads before the free tier does

The free podium
The three companions you can reach an actual conversation with before anyone asks for a card.

The free winner — the only tier that kept full memory without a payment method on file.

Second place is deep and generous, then meters image replies from the fourth one onward.

Third place gives you the most messages of anyone and the shortest memory of the three.
04In practice
What a free evening actually looks like
You confirm your age, pick a companion from the full roster, and start typing. No card field, no trial timer, no email verification loop. The first twenty minutes are indistinguishable from the paid experience — same memory, same pacing, same tone controls — because the free tier on our winner is the product, not a demo of it.
The honest part: around the point where you would want voice, or a scene with more specific settings, you meet the wall. It is one screen, it names the price, and closing it drops you back into the same conversation rather than a locked thread. The free ceiling is real but not a trapdoor, which is exactly the distinction the four questions below get asked about most.
